Every NFL season has a trade deadline: the last moment teams can trade players until the season ends. In 2026, it’s coming soon.
When is the 2026 NFL trade deadline?
Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2026, at 4:00 pm ET (1:00 pm PT).
That’s two days after the Week 9 Sunday games. Any trade must be agreed and sent to the league office before 4:00 pm ET that day.
What is a trade deadline?
A trade is when two teams swap players, draft picks or both. The deadline is the cut-off: after it passes, no more trades are allowed until the new league year starts in March.
The idea is to stop teams from building a "super team" late in the season just before the playoffs.
What can teams still do after the deadline?
The deadline only stops trades. Teams can still:
- Sign free agents: players who aren’t under contract with any team.
- Claim players on waivers: players another team has released.
- Sign players from practice squads: their own or another team’s.
- Promote and release players on their own roster.
So a team that suffers an injury in December can still find a replacement. It just can’t trade for one.
Why are big NFL trades rare?
Fans of the NBA see trades every week, but NFL deadline trades are less common. A few reasons:
- The salary cap. Every team has a hard limit on what it can spend. Taking on a player’s contract mid-season means having enough cap space.
- Learning the playbook. Football playbooks are huge. A new player needs time to learn the plays, especially a quarterback or offensive lineman.
- Draft picks are valuable. NFL teams build through the draft, and many general managers don’t want to give up picks for a short-term boost.
- Short seasons. With only 17 games, there may be only seven or eight games left after the deadline.
What kinds of trades usually happen?
- Contenders adding one piece: a pass rusher, a receiver or a cornerback for the playoff push.
- Rebuilding teams selling veterans: teams out of the race trade older players for draft picks.
- Teams fixing injuries: a team that loses its starting quarterback or left tackle may trade for a replacement.
How do NFL trades work with the salary cap?
When a player is traded, his new team pays the rest of his salary for that season. His old team keeps any signing bonus money that has already been paid (it stays on the old team’s cap as "dead money"). That’s why teams sometimes add a sweetener, like a late draft pick, to get a deal done.
